Thank you for supporting GVCO in honor of our beloved James McKay. James loved basketball. He played his whole life – from his childhood until just after his diagnosis with cancer in 2016. Some of his favorite moments as a player were captaining his Varsity team at Conestoga in 1983, being named Narberth Summer League MVP in 1987, and being part of the Norristown Men’s League for over 20 years and YMCA lunch league for 15 years.
But James’ very best basketball moments came from coaching his sons, Nathanael and Seth, and dozens of other boys at GVBL for almost 10 years. James watched his boys make friends, challenge themselves, and grow as athletes and people on the courts at GVBL. And the dozens of boys James coached over the years just loved him. Coach McKay always encouraged, but never yelled. He celebrated their successes and helped them push through struggles and defeat. He laughed with them and supported them and always put them first. In sharing his love of basketball, James touched many lives and we are lucky to have known him.
James and his wife Marty, and their sons Nathanael and Seth, were so thrilled to donate to the campaign for the new GVCO Center in November 2017. They have seen how youth sports – and basketball in particular – brings families and a community together. Marty and the boys will be so grateful to know that you are helping make this dream a reality with your donation. There was nothing James liked better than to watch (and join!) kids play. In honor of James, we thank you deeply for your contribution.
